What kind of wax do you use? What makes it non-toxic?

We use a vegan blend of natural virgin coconut wax with soy which is gluten free, toxin free, paraben free, phthalate free and come from renewable sources. Unless specifically noted, many candles use toxic wax, and fragrances and fillers with phthalates, parabens and other toxic ingredients. You breathe in anything you burn from your candles so it's important to only burn natural candle waxes and fragrances. Our virgin coconut wax blend also burns 15% longer than soy wax for the same volume and our sustainable wooden wicks make your candle burn up to 30% longer as well!

Why do you use wooden wicks? What is the benefit?

Wooden wicks achieve a fast melt pool formation for quick and excellent hot fragrance throw (the release of scent from a candle ). Wooden wicks produce an alluring crackling sound when burning reminiscent of a campfire. They have no mushrooming with little carbon buildup, debris or sooting. Our wicks are sourced and manufactured in the USA from fsc-certified mills and are completely non-toxic with no additives.

What are your fragrances made of?

Our collection of clean, non-toxic, phthalate-free candle aromas are unique, natural, 100% vegan and created using natural fragrance oils + pure essential oils from around the globe. Our fragrance blends are free from carcinogens, reproductive toxins, and other potentially hazardous chemicals often found in candle fragrances.

How long will my order take to ship?

We are a very small business consisting of one person! While some orders may be packed and shipped the same day, sometimes it may take a business week to get to your order depending on how many orders we receive and if we sell out of some things at our local pop-up markets. We are in the studio every week making more candles, body and face oils, incense and more. We will get to your order as soon as we can! Feel free to message us if you have any questions. We ship all orders via UPS which can take 1-4 days once we ship them out depending on where you are in the U.S. and you will receive an email or text with tracking once your item is ready to ship.

I  want to learn more about how you formulate your natural fragrances/scents for your products. Can you tell me more?

How are our fragrances for our candles, incense, sprays and body care created? Our candles, sprays, body care and incense use a combination of pure organic essential oils and natural fragrance oils. Our facial skincare only uses pure organic essential oils that are there for a function— they just happen to smell good. We cannot use solely essential oils for our candles because the amount of fragrance needed to create a decent cold-throw and hot-throw is 8-12% and if only using pure essential oils, that means each small candle would cost anywhere from $50-$400 just to make so our retail prices would be exorbitant! So we blend a mix of natural fragrance oils and organic essential oils.

With the wellness industry on the rise, the word “natural" is a buzzword that seems to be all the rage these days (and rightfully so!). Consumers are no longer buying products simply for their use - but are seeking direct benefits, specifically in the way that products relate to the environment, their health, and overall well-being.

So what does that mean for fragrances? To understand the difference between synthetic fragrance and natural fragrance (what we use) it’s important to first understand how fragrances are made.

The making of a fragrance oil--

All fragrances begin in nature. Natural oils are extracted from fruits, seeds, herbs, and spices, and then converted into the three types of ingredients that make up the fragrances that we know today.

Each fragrance ingredient is made up of the same three basic elements; carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen each arranged in different ways. Knowing this, scientists have been able to easily replicate natural fragrance essential oils, creating what they call “nature identical compounds.” This gives master perfumers more raw materials to work with when crafting their fragrances while also allowing costs and turnaround times to remain as low as possible.

The three types of fragrance ingredients are:

  • Essential oils
  • Nature identical
  • Man-made

Understanding fragrance ingredients--

After identifying the three raw materials that perfumers use to create fragrances, it’s important to understand why perfumers like to use all three.

Essential oils are compounds that are directly extracted from nature. The extraction process is very labor intensive and extremely time consuming, thus they can be quite costly to work with. Think of pressing plants like a lilac or mint until its natural fragrance oil comes out. Now imagine the process of pressing a piece of wood (sandalwood) to get its oil out. The cost of pure sandalwood essential oil is $100 for .5 oz or $200 for 1 oz and we need 1-3 oz per candle in order for you to smell it!

Nature-identical compounds are replicated from essential oils using the same three carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen molecules as their natural counterparts. This gives perfumers the ability to use fragrances at a lower cost with much faster turnaround, while maintaining the same quality of fragrance.

Man-made fragrance compounds are the third fragrance ingredient option. These fragrance compounds are created using different combinations of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen than their essential oil or nature identical counterparts.

This gives perfumers the creative flexibility to extract specific isolated scents from one compound and create fragrances that mimic more obscure fragrance concepts like re-creating the smell of the ocean breeze.

There are also certain fragrance materials that perfumers have to create synthetically because they are no longer allowed to be extracted from nature, such as musk which was originally extracted from the reproductive organs of musk deer, whales, and beavers.

What are natural fragrance oils?

All Mayumi Goods fragrance oils have been created free of phthalates and crafted using a proprietary blend of essential oils, nature-identical compounds, and man-made fragrance oils.

Our natural fragrance oils contains only a proprietary combination of nature identical fragrance oils and essential oils. This means that though they are referred to as natural because of their nature identical raw materials, they were also created in a lab in the same way as our fragrances containing man-made oils, thus there really is no difference between the two.

All of our fragrance oil blends are phthalate free and compliant with IFRA Standards and skin-safe! For those new to IFRA, the IFRA Standards are the basis of the globally recognized management system for the safe use of fragrance materials.
